Experiment Three: The Bridge

School of Architecture/Architectural Computing/Engineering
Jiuzhaigou Valley, Sichuan, China

"The technologies, architectural designs, and engineering have become ubiquitous and are used to support a wide range of artistic initiatives, with a primary goal of promoting creativity and collaboration to enable the transformative power of architecture.

Beyond one who views architecture as a pure form of sculpture, to reflect values of innovation, ease of use and beauty through functional simplicity, elegant abstraction and a serene environment. Thus refuses to take the conventional path, instead to create something emotive, human and heartfelt that could nurture creativity and sky-high requirements of modern design."

Pillars of MashUp theory

Technologies, architectural designs, and engineering have become ubiquitous

The combination of angular and curved geometry on the facade reflects the amalgamation of function and design, demonstrating the synthesis between students from different faculties with various skills and talent.

Primary goal of promoting creativity and collaboration

The main foyer is the intermediary area between upper and lower section of the school. The lower section allows learning (consisting of lecture theatre, studios, research space, etc.) and the upper sections allows independent or group study to proliferate and expand on knowledge (consisting of meeting rooms, offices, etc.). Also the upper section has elevators to the architectural folly to further gather and consolidate.

The main foyer leads out to the library, computer lab, gallery, and finally to the deck of the bridge that spans the valley. The common room is at the centre of the school, accommodating an area for rest and respite. Thus the organisation and location of the interior spaces promote flow and circulation between different spaces.

Transformative power of architecture

The translucent exterior of the school allow a dynamically changing interior environment. This is also displayed in the overhanging roof of the architectural folly.

The exterior of the dean’s elevator emulates the top section of the school in which it captures the essence of the school transforming into an elevator and traversing off.

The student’s elevator surrounds the dean’s elevator when it lands on the architectural folly, symbolising the unity and collaboration between the dean and the students. Both elevators harmoniously move and rotate to and from the architectural folly.

Serene environment

Snowy isolated mountainous environment of China. The only sound is from the landscape, of rushing rivers and waterfalls.

Sky-high requirements of modern design

The bridge elevated high up, spanning the valley.

Elegant abstraction, emotive, human and heartfelt

The unification of facade, exterior spaces, interior spaces, collaboration, circulation, transformative architecture, serene environment and sky-high requirements of modern design work together to establish elegant abstraction and something emotive, human and heartfelt.
